POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS

This course covers all concepts of power systems analysis. Power system analysis is the core of power engineering and its understanding is therefore essential for a career in this field. In this first course you will learn about three-phase power, generator, transformer, and transmission line models, how to analyze power systems using the per-unit system, how to perform load flow in power systems and how to analyze short circuits (faults).

TRANSFORMER PROTECTION

This course covers transformer protection in detail. We will discuss the different transformer connections and the use of protective elements specific to transformer protection, such as phase differential (87P), ground differential (87G/REF), volts/hertz (24), as well as how to use both phase and neutral overcurrent elements (50P/51P/51N) for transformer protection.

BUSBAR PROTECTION

This course covers low-impedance and high-impedance bus differential protection. These protective elements are found in modern microprocessor-based relays, such as the SEL-487B and SEL-587Z protective relays. This course is designed for practicing protection engineers.

PROTECTIVE RELAY LOGIC

This course covers how to implement different logic schemes using protective relays. Focusing on SEL protective relays, we will discuss what logic gates, timers, and latches are, and will see how to use these elements to develop logic schemes, such as breaker failure, permissive tripping, overcurrent blocking, and automatic reclosing schemes.

SYMMETRICAL COMPONENTS

This course covers symmetrical components in a great amount of detail. Symmetrical components is a mathematical tool used for the analysis of unbalances in power systems, including faults. Because of this, a thorough understanding of symmetrical components is key for aspiring protection engineers.

MATLAB/SIMULINK FOR POWER SYSTEM SIMULATIONS

This course is designed to allow you to simulate power systems in MATLAB/Simulink. This course not only gives a review of the theory of how power systems operate, but also gives several examples on how to run different types of power system studies using MATLAB/Simulink.

MATLAB/SIMULINK FOR POWER ELECTRONICS SIMULATIONS

This course is designed to allow you to simulate any power electronics device in MATLAB/Simulink, including rectifiers, dc-to-dc converters, and inverters. This course not only gives a review of the theory of how rectifiers, dc-to-dc converters, and inverters work, but also gives several examples on how to simulate these devices using MATLAB/Simulink. The MATLAB/Simulink models for the power electronics devices created during the lectures are available for download with each lecture.

AC ELECTRIC CIRCUIT ANALYSIS

This course covers the analysis of AC circuits, including important concepts, such as phasors, impedance, admittance, instantaneous power, RMS quantities, power factor, and complex power.

POWER ELECTRONICS FUNDAMENTALS

This course is designed to provide a complete overview of one of the main areas of electrical engineering and power engineering: power electronics. The three main types of power electronics devices (i.e., rectifiers, dc-to-dc converters, and inverters) are discussed in detail in the lectures. For each device, the ideal circuit is discussed along with different circuit topologies to provide a wide range of practical uses.

ELECTRIC CIRCUIT ANALYSIS

This course is designed to provide a complete overview of electric circuit analysis used in electrical engineering, including simplification of complex circuits, advanced circuit analysis techniques, and analysis of circuits during transients.
